Benjamin Britten - Gemini Variations
Britten wrote this unique piece while working in Budapest, where he encountered a pair of twin boys, who begged him to write them a piece that featured them on each of their 2 instruments: Gábor played the violin and piano, and Zoltán played the flute and piano. Since they pestered him so much, he agreed to write them a piece if they wrote him a letter introducing and telling them about themselves. In the letters, Gábor describes himself as impulsive, and Zoltán as lazy. "Zoltán likes comfort I love struggle," he writes. You might say we are the modern day incarnation of the Jeney brothers...
